Why Do People Buy Supplements?
People generally invest in nutrition supplements to look & feel better. Many people believe that getting the right group of vitamins & minerals in their diet is the key to maintaining a healthy looking appearance.
The right mix of vitamins, supplements, & exercise can help you look younger & feel more energetic. When some people think of vitamins & health supplements, they may think of those "muscle heads" that they see at the gym drinking massive 64oz. powdered drinks after lifting weights at the local gym. However, many normal people take health supplements in order to enhance their health & keep themselves sharp & focused throughout the day. Getting the right balance between vitamins, exercise, & supplements is the trick to maintaining a year round healthy appearance...
How Do They Do It?
If you've ever seen any of the people who look like they've discovered the "fountain of youth," it's sometimes really amazing what they've been able to accomplish...some 50 year old people look like they are in their early 30s! I bet you know a few of these people – and if you've ever been to California, you can see them walking (or rollerblading) around. If you ask them, they'll often admit that they take a steady regimen of vitamins & health supplements combined with a daily exercise program.
In fact, one of the best ways to get in better shape is to use a combination of exercise & vitamins. Combining vitamins with the right exercise regimen make a great fitness combination because they feed off each other. Quality nutrients come in to the body & daily exercise helps burn off any excess calories. However, like everything, the key lies in consistency...you've got to make a concerted effort to keep on target in order to keep getting in better & better shape.
So Many Options
Since there are many so many vitamin & supplement options available, it can be tricky to figure out which vitamins to invest in. It seems that like new products & brands are constantly coming out all the time. The key to it all is just like anything else- you've got to first figure out what YOU want. If you want to lose a lot of weight, you need to figure out exactly how much weight you want to lose & then shop around for a supplement that is right on target for you. If you want to build a lot of muscle mass, you need to shop for products that help you build muscle. And if you want more nutrients in your diet, look for supplements that help in that department. It's that easy...

Liquid Supplements and Vitamins Versus Pill-Type Supplements and Vitamins - Which is Better?

There is a long tradition of delivering vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements in the form of pills, capsules and tablets. However, in recent years it has been discovered that the most effective way to have your body absorb vitamins and other nutritional supplements is in liquid form and delivered through an oral spray or a dropper. There are various reasons why liquid supplements are more advantageous.
Liquid supplements allow a person’s body to directly absorb the nutrients into the bloodstream within seconds through the buccal mucosa (the cells of your mouth). Pills, capsules and tablets are designed to be broken down in the digestive track where absorption and benefits could take hours.
The highly respected Physician's Desk Reference contains research that states that only about 10% to 20% of the nutrients in vitamins pills are absorbed into the human body. The rest ends up as waste. It also states that absorption of liquid supplement drinks or sprays can be 98%. Other research shows that liquid supplements can be up to 10 times more effective than nutritional supplements in pill form.
Additionally, pills, capsules and tablets are made with many “inactive” or binding ingredients that have no benefit to the body and actually inhibit absorption. All you need to do is read a few labels on vitamin containers and you’ll see a list of these “inactive” ingredients that include wax, talcum powder, sugar, yeast and starch all which make it more difficult for the body to breakdown and eventually absorb the active ingredients.
Taking pill-type supplements can be tedious and unpleasant for many people especially the elderly. They cannot stand throwing pills into the back of their mouth and forcefully trying to consume them with a glass of water. Due to the varying sizes of pill type supplements many people experience a gag reflex, and the dry and chalky after-taste becomes a barrier. All of these problems are avoided by the use of liquid vitamins and supplements.
In general, using liquid supplements, particularly delivered by a spray or dropper, is much more effective and convenient to carry about and administer. They taste good and the body does not need to work hard to absorb the active ingredients. When sprayed or dropped in the mouth and held for 10 to 20 seconds the nutrients are absorbed and enter the bloodstream in seconds or minutes not hours it takes for pills. Many health experts now believe that this delivery system is most beneficial to the body considering that it offers a quicker full delivery of nutrients. Other than having them delivered through an IV at a doctor’s office or hospital, a liquid or spray is the best most cost effective way to receive your daily vitamins and supplements.

Do I need To Take Vitamin Supplements?
Power Vegetables In A Drink |
|
So we turn to vitamin and mineral supplements. But in doing so are we just throwing out money down the toilet, literally!
Today's grocery stores and pharmacies are stocked full of every imaginable supplement you can think of. So what should we take and how much should we take? No easy answer is readily available for that question.
Vitamins and minerals are the building blocks of our bodies. You could say that this is nature's way of rebuilding the cells, tissues and bones that make up the human body. The National Institutes of Health tells us that vitamins are substances that your body needs to grow and develop normally. There are 13 vitamins your body needs. They are vitamins A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folate.
But don't run off to the super market or health food store and buy a bottle of each one. The answer that has been with us for decades is the multi-vitamin, which combines all (or most of) the vitamins we need every day. But what about the so called...minerals? Aren't they necessary for healthy living too? They certainly are. We need to meet certain daily requirements for potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iodine, and zinc are basic to good health. But physicians warn that too much of a good thing can be very harmful to our health. Seems like moderation is the key here as it is with anything else we put into our bodies. The human body is a masterful piece of engineering. It can manufacture some of the vitamins we need-like vitamins D and K. The rest SHOULD come from food. But alas, that is not always the case.
How many vitamins and minerals are in a slice of pizza or a Big Mac?
Each vitamin listed above has a specific job so if your intake is low in certain vitamins, some body functions will suffer. Low intake of vitamin D for example can result in poor bone growth leading to a disease known as "rickets." Low intake of vitamin A can result in poor eyesight or night blindness.
Our best source for vitamin D is sunlight-something that you won't find in a bottle. But for a skin cancer survivor like me, I can't take the chance of overexposure to the beneficial rays of the sun. If I want my bones to stay healthy I must turn to supplements. How about you?
I don't pretend to be a health care expert. I'm just trying to live a normal, healthy life. But the old saying, "Let the buyer beware," holds true for vitamin and mineral supplements.
The American public spends about $70 Billion a year on vitamin and mineral supplements, which makes this a very competitive business. Countless manufacturers are all trying to grab a portion of this incredible market. In other words, rip-offs abound, so be careful of what you buy.
